“Yegó La Lú” depicts the socioeconomic condition and the complex relationship between electricity service and everyday life in the Dominican Republic and much of the Caribbean. Through the depiction of a transformer emitting flashes, the artwork symbolizes the hope and the uncertainty associated with this basic service. Inspired by memories of transformers exploding in the Los Transformadores sector of La Caleta where he grew up, the painting blurs the line between happiness, danger, and uncertainty, reflecting on the crucial importance of electricity for aspects such as food production, entertainment, and work. The cry of “Yegó La Lú” embodies the euphoria and urgency with which electricity is received back, instantly activating devices that illuminate and vitalize both homes and the streets.

In Laura’s practice, landscape painting constitutes a tool of rootedness and political imagination that allows her to delve into her own relationship with her place of origin, beyond nationalist and patriarchal constructions about Dominican identity in which she doesn’t feel included. For some time now, she has been developing various pictorial languages simultaneously as a way to be coherent with her heterogeneous roots and as a celebration of her brownness. The act of painting is, for Castro, a space to remember and reconstruct relationships that have been interrupted and erased by colonialism.

Armor 2. Now It's Time to Take Care of Myself
The second work, Now It's Time to Take Care of Myself, speaks to the experience of growing up, breaking down, and blooming through trial and error, independence, and solitude. The artist rebuilds a family nucleus from a place of independence, creating a new nest and finding ways to protect and care for herself.
This piece reflects the need to find a sense of belonging and safety in a hostile world—returning to anchoring figures and the comforts of childhood, while creating a space of her own where she can feel safe and protected. The work becomes a symbol of resilience and the ability to flourish in the midst of adversity.

“Armor 1. Skin Mapping Through Time” by Sofía Espíndola is part of a series born from an urgent need for protection against the weight of external judgment.
The armor, as a symbolic shell, is shaped and reshaped by social expectations — beauty, youth, perfection — until it begins to distort. But in this piece, the armor is no longer rigid: it becomes vulnerable. A scarf of wrinkled skin wraps around the chest and body, embracing what is usually hidden.
Skin, a witness of time, becomes both map and manifesto. The work offers an intimate form of resistance against the imposition of eternal youth — an unattainable ideal that often demands the abandonment of authenticity.
Here, the armor does not conceal: it protects the truth of a body that lives, changes, and resists. It celebrates imperfection as a form of beauty, transforming the shield into a gesture of self-acceptance.

“Untitled” (2023) is part of an ongoing investigation into the possibilities within the loom and her relation to it. Handwoven on a Jacquard loom, she combines technical skill with digital innovation to explore the performative nature of weaving — from the physical engagement it requires to the personal, up-close connection with the device itself. In doing so, Andrea delves deeper into themes of identity, intimacy, and memory. Memory embodies the recollection of something that has ceased to exist, no longer present but persisting in consciousness. Through this artwork, Andrea endeavors to unveil layers of vulnerability, delicately revealing the essence of the feminine form, bringing to light emotions that lie beyond the surface, a tether to our origins and the earth beneath us.
